      History of Tudor City

Tudor City is the brain child of architect Fred F. French, who saw the need for a residential complex to house the many middle-class families who were moving to New York in large numbers in the twenties. The idea was to have a group of buildings located around a park and containing amenities for all residents to enjoy. He wanted people living in Manhattan to have access to a comfortable lifestyle and yet be able to walk to work if their jobs were downtown.

To finance Tudor City, French sold stocks in his company, paid out dividends and shared the profits. The buildings were constructed to face west, toward the parks, rather than east because at the time of construction the East River was the location of slaughterhouses and barge landings. Today, however, there is a great view of the river from the viaduct above 42nd Street and one can see all the way across to Long Island.

A generation ago, the residents of Tudor City had to take up a legal battle to save the parks. In 1972 Tudor City was bought by the Helmsley-Spear company who planned to construct further buildings in the spaces where the parks are currently located. Led by John McKean, the residents took up battle, first by preventing a bulldozer from entering the grounds and then winning their case against Harry and Leona Helmsley in court.

      Tudor City Today

Since then Tudor City has been sold to Time Equities, Inc., a company that has been converting the buildings into cooperative ownership. The parks were transferred to the Trust for Public Land and the development rights to these spaces were extinguished. Today ownership has once more transferred to a new company – Tudor City Greens – which has been looking after them ever since.

When traveling or visiting Grand Central Terminal or the United Nations building, this is a great place to relax. It is an unexpected beauty spot of peace and quiet in the heart of the city.
